To make a day of it
Burg Lichtenberg stands in Salzgitter (Salzgitter), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Lichtenberg Castle stands as a ruin on a rocky spur of the Lichtenberge hills, in the northwestern part of the Salzgitter range in Lower Saxony. Built from the early 12th century and expanded around 1170 to 1180, it was one of the major strongholds of Duke Henry the Lion and played a strategic role in the conflicts between the Welf and Hohenstaufen dynasties. The remains still show the typical layout of a medieval hilltop fortress, with an outer bailey, sections of the enceinte, tower remnants and a well some sixty metres deep. Destroyed by mercenary artillery in 1552, the castle was never rebuilt, though a reconstructed keep now stands open to visitors.
