To make a day of it

Altsachsenheim stands in Sachsenheim (Landkreis Ludwigsburg), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Altsachsenheim is a ruined hilltop castle overlooking the Enz valley above the hamlet of Untermberg. Tradition holds that it was the ancestral seat of the lords of Sachsenheim, though heritage researchers now lean toward the theory that it was actually built by the related lords of Remmingen. Visitors find an almost square ground plan, with walls several metres thick still standing up to fifteen metres high in places, remnants of a keep whose surviving stone corbels reveal three vanished storeys. Nearby, the hamlet of Egartenhof with its 16th-century manor house, and a solitary tower locally nicknamed the 'Mäuseturm', round out a visit to the site.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin, with no enclosed building or indoor exhibition.
  • Access is on foot, via a steep path from the hamlet of Egartenhof.
  • As no opening hours or fees are set for this site, visits are unrestricted but the ground is uneven.
  • There is no dedicated parking or accessibility provision on site.
  • Nearby, the Egartenhof manor house and the Mäuseturm tower can only be seen from the outside.
