To make a day of it

Altes Jagdschlösschen Harreshausen stands in Babenhausen (Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Jagdschlösschen Harreshausen is a small baroque hunting lodge in the Harreshausen district of Babenhausen, in Hesse. Count Johann Reinhard III of Hanau had it built in 1722-1723 as a hunting residence, part of a wave of similar building projects undertaken during his reign. The square two-storey house, topped by a mansard hip roof with dormer windows, was aligned with an avenue that once connected it directly to Schloss Babenhausen. Now in private hands, the building cannot be visited.

What to know

  • The lodge is private property and cannot be visited, neither inside nor in its grounds.
  • Only the exterior can be seen from the outside while walking through Harreshausen.
  • The former elm avenue that once linked it to Babenhausen disappeared in the 1960s due to Dutch elm disease and was replaced by lindens and horse chestnuts, now protected as a natural monument.
  • The building is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Hesse, which does not mean it is open to visitors.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as the site is private and not set up for tourism.
