The Alte Burg stands beside the Elde river, just outside the centre of Neustadt-Glewe, and is considered the oldest surviving fortified castle in Mecklenburg. Founded in the mid-13th century by the Counts of Schwerin on a natural river dune, it later served as a bailiwick and then as a secondary residence of the Mecklenburg dukes, before taking on roles as varied as a technical school, a stud farm depot and a youth hostel. Visitors today can climb the 28-metre keep, whose upper floor with its large arched windows was converted into a grand hall, and see a museum devoted to the castle's history.
What to know
