To make a day of it

Château Saint-Sixte stands in Freistroff (Moselle), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 16th century, 18th century). Adult admission costs 6 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Saint-Sixte castle stands on a plain by the Nied river, between Freistroff and Rémelfang in the Moselle department. Built in the 12th century by lord Wirich de Valcourt, then altered in the 16th century and turned into a residence in the 18th, it follows an oval plan surrounded by the former moat once connected to the river. Around its enclosed courtyard stand several buildings from different periods, along with three polygonal stair towers still standing, a fourth having since disappeared. Rescued from ruin by the same family since 1986, it is now the subject of an extensive restoration programme.
