The feudal castle of Sancerre once stood atop a hill overlooking the Loire valley, home to the powerful counts of Sancerre from the 11th to the 15th century. Torn down in 1621, only a cylindrical keep from the late 14th century remains, known as the tour des Fiefs, the sole tangible trace of the medieval stronghold. The rest of the grounds now hold a 19th-century mansion and a private park, unrelated in style to the former fortress. Visitors mainly come for this standalone tower and the view it offers over the vineyards and the river.

What to know

Only the tour des Fiefs, the medieval keep, can be visited; the rest of the estate is private and now operates as a hotel.
