To make a day of it

Château du Parc stands in Châteauroux (Indre), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second half of the 18th century, third quarter of the 19th century). No visits are on record for this building.

Châteauroux's Château du Parc stands on the remains of a medieval fortress and housed a cloth manufactory from 1751 onwards. The site was enlarged and modernized under Pierre Balsan, who acquired it in 1856 and built a new six-hectare facility between 1860 and 1867 powered by steam. This complex became one of France's major military cloth producers. The ensemble merges structures from two eras: eighteenth-century workshops and the symmetrical industrial halls of the Second Empire, marking the architectural transition from concentrated craftwork to mechanized manufacturing.

What to know

  • The site preserves the medieval tower, eighteenth-century royal manufactory buildings, and nineteenth-century industrial structures, some now housing the local fire station.
  • Production ceased in 1991, leading to progressive closure and fragmentation of the property.
  • The monument has been registered since 1996, protecting facades, roofs, industrial buildings, and the original spatial layout.
  • The manufactory shaped the western expansion of Châteauroux through workers' housing, schools, and orthogonal urban planning around the facility.
