What to know

  • The site contains traces of occupation dating back to Roman times, visible in the foundations and materials used for certain sections.
  • The interior paintings and fireplaces bear the initials H and D as well as the three intertwined crescents associated with Diane de Poitiers.
  • The eastern wing rests on earlier constructions, of which a stone staircase in medieval style and Gothic bays with characteristic herringbone-patterned walls remain.
  • The castle was plundered in 1792 and underwent complete restoration in 1931, during which the mythological paintings and stained glass windows were handled by specialist restorers.
