To make a day of it

Château du Lou-du-Lac stands in La Chapelle du Lou du Lac (Ille-et-Vilaine), in the Bretagne region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century, 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

The Lou-du-Lac château in Ille-et-Vilaine tells the story of two successive building campaigns: a manor erected in 1571 by the lord of La Lande, and a century later, a new castle designed in classical fashion, dated 1657 at its entrance. Financial constraints meant only the north wing was completed before the original structure and its replacement stood side by side until 1877. What remains displays local slate and granite masonry, modelled on the Breton Parliament, and survives in unusual authenticity: the castle saw minimal occupation in the nineteenth century and later owners undertook few alterations.

What to know

  • The old moats, platform masonry and a south-west corner tower survive from the sixteenth-century manor, though it cannot be certain whether this tower dates to 1571 or the seventeenth-century reconstruction.
  • The north wing, the only part completed of the ambitious project begun around 1657, retains its monumental ramped staircase and entrance platform intact, two remarkable features of learned architecture of that period.
  • The château has undergone no major restoration since the nineteenth century, preserving its original interior layouts where formal rooms and service spaces remain clearly separated.
  • The construction combines French classical vocabulary with the austerity of regional Rennes style, a direct influence from the Breton Parliament, whose construction ended in 1655.

Frequently asked

When was the Lou-du-Lac château built?
The original manor dates to 1571. A new château was begun around 1657, with only the north wing completed before the project was abandoned, likely due to lack of funds.
What remains of the sixteenth-century manor?
The moats, platform masonry and possibly the south-west tower survive from the 1571 manor, though the exact dating of this tower remains uncertain.
What architectural style characterizes the château?
The north wing, built in the seventeenth century, follows French classical style tempered by regional austerity, directly inspired by the Breton Parliament completed in 1655.
