In the village of Labastide-de-Virac, in southern Ardèche, the Château des Roure rises above the rooftops with its two round towers and keep. Built in the late 16th century on the remains of a medieval stronghold, it lived through the Wars of Religion before becoming, in the 19th century, one of the region's largest silkworm farms. A visit combines the lord's chambers, silk production displays and a medieval-themed grounds with trebuchet, enough to fill much of a day.
