On the hill of Talant overlooking the Ouche valley, only one underground remnant survives from the fortress of the dukes of Burgundy: a vaulted 13th-century cellar. The stronghold was once favoured by the dukes before being demolished on royal order at the end of the 16th century. A staircase of forty-six steps leads down to eight ribbed vaults, the sole physical trace of a complex that once counted thirty-three towers.
