To make a day of it

Château des Carmes stands in La Flèche (Sarthe), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In La Flèche, the château des Carmes stands on a site fortified since the mid eleventh century, on an island in the Loir river. Only the fifteenth century tower survives from that period, topped with two neo classical turrets added in 1880. The rest of the buildings date from the Carmelite convent established there in the seventeenth century, after the old fortress fell into ruin. Now housing the town hall, the site also hosts exhibitions, receptions and weddings.

What to know

  • The château now houses La Flèche's town hall, which limits visits to certain areas.
  • A fire in 1919 destroyed much of the buildings, sparing only the medieval tower.
  • The site consists of two islets separated by canals, with a main courtyard closed by a gate.
  • The former chapel and cloister were altered over time, the chapel now serving as an event hall.
