What the French Ministry of Culture records

Sur l'emplacement d'une seigneurie attestée au 16e siècle, au-dessus d'un vallon profond affluent au Layon, René Montrieux, administrateur des Ardoisières d'Angers, fait dessiner et édifier entre 1853 et 1856 un parc et un nouveau château par l'architecte-paysagiste Choulot et l'architecte Mortier, tous deux parisiens et de renom. Plan massé emprunté à la culture maniériste de Jacques du Cerceau et Salomon de Brosse : jeu illusionniste des perspectives et de la polychromie des matériaux (ardoises, briques) , profusion exceptionnelle du décor sculpté de façade en trophées de chasse, ... La chapelle est construite en 1888 par l'architecte angevin Beignet.
