To make a day of it

Château de Villiers-Saint-Denis stands in Villiers-Saint-Denis (Aisne), in the Hauts-de-France region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 18th century, 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In Villiers-Saint-Denis, in the Aisne department, this 18th century château has had an unusual history: once home to Émilien de Nieuwerkerke, a figure close to Napoleon III, it became a sanatorium between the two world wars and later a hospital, a function it still serves today. Rebuilt over the remains of a medieval structure, traces of which survive in the cellars, it retains its façades, an interior staircase with a wrought iron handrail, and a lawn bordered by three hundred year old trees, remnants of a park laid out by landscape designer Jean-Marie Morel. The building is not a museum but a working medical facility, which shapes entirely how one can approach the site.
