In Vertheuil, in the Gironde department, the remains of a medieval stronghold stand within a polygonal enclosure surrounded by a wide circular moat. The central Romanesque keep, predating the 12th century, and the 14th century barbican reveal the successive alterations the site underwent through wars and changes of ownership. Visitors come for the defensive architecture rather than a furnished interior, since the building was ransacked in the 16th century and altered again in the 18th.
