To make a day of it

Château de Vernode stands in Tocane-Saint-Apre (Dordogne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument. No visits are on record for this building.

Standing on a steep promontory above the Dronne river, the château de Vernode still shows two Romanesque towers from what was once a fortified quadrangle of four. One of them, thought to be the former keep, holds a domed vault on pendentives rare enough that the architect Léo Drouyn compared it to the one at Saint-Front cathedral in Périgueux. Finds around the site point to occupation since Antiquity, and the ruins recall a feudal motte and a lordship that endured through the Hundred Years' War.
