To make a day of it

Château de Vendrennes stands in Vendrennes (Vendée), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 14th century, 15th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

The château de Vendrennes still displays its medieval silhouette in the Vendée bocage countryside. Its original square keep, flanked by round towers, belongs to a limited group of Romanesque structures related to the Niort type, a connection confirmed when remains of a Romanesque church were found within the enclosure in 1989. The site endured the Wars of Religion and later the Vendée uprising, which led to its burning in 1794 after a tragic episode remembered locally.
