To make a day of it

Château de l'Étenduère stands in Les Herbiers (Vendée), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

On the edge of Les Herbiers, in the Vendée, a few weakened stretches of wall mark the site of a former castle linked to the des Herbiers family, one of whom commanded the French navy at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1747. Originally a modest dwelling in the 14th century, it was later fortified with gun ports, a drawbridge and machicolations, before being burned down during the Vendée wars. Located southwest of town near the Buzinière area, the ruins are the focus of a volunteer-led conservation project.
