In Thiviers, in the Dordogne, the château de Vaucocour stands just behind the chevet of the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church, right in the heart of town. It occupies the site of a 12th century fortress that once overlooked the road linking Limoges and Périgueux from its elevated position. Destroyed during the Wars of Religion in 1575, it was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century. The château remains privately owned and is best seen from the surrounding streets.
