The château de Vascœuil stands in the Eure department, combining a twelfth century octagonal tower with a main house reworked in the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The historian Jules Michelet stayed here repeatedly in the mid nineteenth century, setting up his study at the top of the tower to write his Histoire de France. Surrounded by a three hectare formal park, the estate now houses an art centre where sculptures and contemporary works sit alongside the old buildings, including a dovecote and a farm.
