Built over the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa and a medieval fort, the Château de Saint-Privat retains features from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, including three towers with rusticated stonework. Visitors come mainly for the gardens redesigned in the early twentieth century by Jacques Rouché, former director of the Paris Opera, and for the chapel whose paintings, commissioned in 1922 from Georges Desvallières, reflect on the sacrifice of soldiers in the First World War. The estate also includes a water feature, an orangery, a nymphaeum and the Balauzière grotto.
