What the French Ministry of Culture records

La maison d'Apcher occupa, dès le 13e siècle, le château fortifié qui se transforma progressivement en demeure seigneuriale. Au 14e siècle, le village fut occupé par les envahisseurs anglais. Le château était alors le siège d'un fief relevant de l'évêque de Mende. Construit au 15e siècle, le château a été ultérieurement mutilé par la suppression de ses parties hautes. Autour d'une cour intérieure, les bâtiments sont disposés sur un plan à peu près rectangulaire avec, à chaque angle, une tour ronde. Le portail d'entrée, en grès rouge avec tympan portant un écu, fut percé sous Henri IV. Sur l'une des faces de la cour intérieure règne une galerie de trois étages remontant au 17e siècle. A l'intérieur, l'une des salles latérales présente un plafond de bois décoré de peintures rayonnant autour de trois médaillons où sont figurés les châteaux féodaux sans doute régionaux.
