To make a day of it

Château de Prulay stands in Saint-Langis-lès-Mortagne (Orne), in the Normandie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: third quarter of the 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Prulay castle was entirely rebuilt in the final third of the 18th century for Pierre-Isaac Poissonnier, physician to Louis XVI, on the site of an older residence held by the Prulay family since the 12th century. The architect designed its façades and interior decoration in neoclassical style, and around 1804 the landscape gardener Berthault reshaped the grounds into an English-style composition with follies, sculptures, and decorative outbuildings. A brick facing applied in 1857 changed its external appearance, though the structure and Empire-period interiors remain : a billiards room with landscape paintings, an 18th-century dining room, staircase, and library.

  • The English-style park, created by Berthault, covers considerable grounds and includes paths, sculptures, and picturesque structures.

Frequently asked

When did the castle acquire its present appearance ?
The castle was entirely rebuilt between 1774 and the early 19th century in neoclassical style. A brick renovation in 1857 gave the façade its current, more austere aspect compared to 19th-century engravings.
Who designed the park ?
Landscape gardener Berthault laid out the park around 1804 in English style, with winding paths, follies, sculptures, a chapel, bathhouse pavilion, and a picturesque structure called a vacherie.
What is the history of the property before the 18th century ?
The Prulay family has held the estate since its emergence in 1170. By the 18th century, it extended over more than 100 hectares, including the castle, farms, and mills.
