Pégairolles-de-l'Escalette castle stands at the heart of this Hérault village, consisting of three buildings arranged around an interior courtyard. First recorded in 824, when Louis the Pious granted it to the bishop of Lodève, this feudal stronghold gradually evolved into a seigneurial residence. Four corner towers, one originally adjoining a rectangular keep now partially in ruins, once crowned the defenses until their crenellations were removed during the Revolution. The structure reflects successive modifications from the 12th to 17th centuries, when it acquired most of its present appearance.
What to know

- The ground floor, entirely covered with ribbed vaults, once housed storage areas, granaries and stables, while living quarters occupied the north wing and central section.
- The castle is listed as a historic monument, a protection extending to its façades, roofs and galleries since 1984.
