Mentionné dès 976, le château est assis à la pointe d'un éperon rocheux dont le parc boisé suit la crête. Le château et ses abords ont été entièrement restaurés par l'architecte Louis Dupasquier (1800-1870) qui a cherché à restituer une forteresse médiévale complète. Le domaine est aujourd'hui composé de deux parties : le parc à l'ouest et le complexe castral à l'est, chacune des deux zones possédant une enceinte propre. Le château concentre tous les éléments propres à l'esthétique néo-gothique : tours, donjon, créneaux, composant une architecture et un décor intacts depuis sa création.
