What the French Ministry of Culture records

Implanté sur une éminence rocheuse dominant la plaine des sources de la Mosson, ce château est l’un des plus anciens du Bas-Languedoc, mentionné dès le 11e siècle. En dépit des apports du 19e siècle, il conserve les apparences et attributs d’un château fort médiéval : un bâtiment rectangulaire principal flanqué de quatre tours d’angle rondes et une cour carrée intérieure. Cet ensemble architectural présente l’intérêt rare et double de posséder une documentation remarquable sur les propriétaires du site (une continuité de lignée depuis la fin du 12e siècle) et sur les modifications et travaux entrepris sur le monument depuis le 14e siècle.
