To make a day of it

Château de Mison stands in Mison (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky spur above the confluence of the Méouge and Buëch rivers, the ruins of Mison castle illustrate the medieval military architecture of Provence. Built by the Mévouillon family and later taken over by the Count of Provence at the end of the 13th century, the structure was arranged around a central courtyard flanked by four wings and square towers. Left abandoned after the 17th century, it has been under gradual restoration since 2005. Visitors mainly come for the wide view from the ramparts over the Buëch valley and the Chabre mountain.

What to know

  • The castle consists of ruins undergoing gradual restoration, not a fully restored building.
