Set at the tip of a rocky spur above the village of Simiane-la-Rotonde, this medieval castle takes its name from its twelve-sided keep, built between 1190 and 1210 by the Agoult family. Inside stands a round Romanesque hall topped by a vaulted ceiling whose stone ribs twist gently toward a central oculus, surrounded by twelve carved niches. The capitals bear carved faces - a monk, a gagged man, a bearded figure - whose meaning remains debated. Remnants of the 13th- and 14th-century seigneurial residence add further depth to the visit.
