What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château a été construit en 1720 par la reine douairière d'Espagne Marie Anna de Neubourg, veuve de Charles II. Ses héritiers le vendirent à la fin du 18e siècle aux évêques de Bayonne qui s'en servirent comme maison de campagne. Pendant la Révolution, il fut vendu comme bien national. En 1808, le maréchal Duroc en fit l'acquisition au nom de Napoléon Ier. L'empereur et Joséphine y séjournèrent. C'est là que furent discutées avec Charles IV, roi d'Espagne, les conditions du traité de Bayonne qui rétrocédait la couronne d'Espagne à Napoléon. En 1822, il fut mis à la disposition des officiers d'artillerie. En 1825, il fut ruiné par un incendie. Il n'en reste que deux pans de murs.
