In Lunéville stands a large 18th century château that reflects the dukes of Lorraine's ambition to rival Versailles. Built for Duke Léopold I from 1703, its asymmetrical shape comes from a north wing that was never completed due to lack of funds. Stanislas Leszczyński, the deposed king of Poland, lived here until his accidental death in 1766, the event that led to the duchy's annexation by France. The building has been struck by fire several times, most notably in 2003, and still bears the marks of these repeated reconstructions.
