What the French Ministry of Culture records

La seigneurie de Lunéville est la possession des ducs de Lorraine dès le 13e siècle. En 1702, le duc Léopold s'installe à Lunéville avec sa cour et reconstruit le château, de 1703 à 1723, sur les plans de Bourdiet, Dorbay et Boffrand (plan en U). Modifications intérieures vers le milieu du 18e siècle avec l'arrivée du roi Stanislas, qui y vit de 1737 jusqu'à sa mort en 1766. Au 19e siècle, des incendies en 1814 et 1849 entraînent d'importantes restaurations. Quelques travaux au 20e siècle, essentiellement les toitures et les balustrades. Actuellement, le château est réparti entre l'armée, les services administratifs et le musée municipal. L'édifice a été ravagé par un incendie en janvier 2003.
