Perched on a hill above Lournand, a few kilometres from Cluny, the château de Lourdon stands as ruins that trace nearly a thousand years of history tied to the powerful neighbouring abbey. Visitors can see the remains of a surrounding wall flanked by two towers, the traces of a rare real tennis court built at the end of the 16th century for abbot Claude de Guise, and remnants of a park once enclosed by a long wall dotted with twelve round towers. A private property, the site opens only on exceptional occasions, notably during the European Heritage Days.
