What the French Ministry of Culture records
Lézignac comptait parmi les plus importantes granges de l'abbaye cistercienne de Candeil, très puissante en Languedoc du Moyen-Age à la Révolution, époque à laquelle elle fut presque entièrement arrasée. Offert par le compte de Lautrec dès 1159 aux religieux de Candeil, le domaine comportait des terres, un moulin et le château. Ce dernier fut utilisé à plusieurs reprises par les abbés de Candeil comme lieu de résidence. Le château se compose d'un bâtiment principal, datable en majeure partie du 15e et du 16e siècle. Les sous-bassements (caves, vestiges de tour et de donjon, souterrain) remontent aux 12e et 13e siècles. Les grandes fenêtres qui éclairent les façades longitudinales nord et sud ont pu être percées vers 1760-1780, lorsque Lézignac était le lieu de résidence officielle des abbés de Candeil. Quelques transformations au 19e siècle ont fait perdre à la construction le caractère défensif et historique de certaines de ses parties (tour de brique et cour intérieure).
