To make a day of it

Château de Leuc stands in Leuc (Aude), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 14th century, 15th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Standing on a hilltop above the Lauquet valley, Leuc castle once guarded the road between Carcassonne and Saint-Hilaire at a narrow passage in the valley. Of the original five-tower quadrangle, only the south-west half and three towers remain, including a keep that still shows traces of its old timber hoarding. Inside, a grand staircase and a hall with a monumental fireplace bear the arms of the Dax family, who turned the medieval stronghold into a more refined residence in the 15th century.
