Château de Largentière stands in Largentière (Ardèche), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Château de Largentière stands on a rocky spur above the terraced rooftops of the village, in the Ligne valley in Ardèche. Its origins date to the 13th century, when the Bishop of Viviers had a tower built to oversee the nearby silver mines and assert his rights against the Count of Toulouse. The keep, which grew out of this tower known as Argentaria, rises some thirty metres high with walls three metres thick. The site still bears witness to the medieval rivalry between church and county for control of the silver-bearing lead ore.
