At the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, the château de la Muette is now only a distant echo of the three earlier buildings that once stood on this site. The current structure, built in the 1920s for Henri de Rothschild in a style evoking the eighteenth century, houses the headquarters of the OECD and is not open to the public as a heritage site to tour. Its interest lies mainly in its history: a royal hunting lodge given to Queen Margot, later home to the Duchess of Berry, then rebuilt for Louis XV, where Marie-Antoinette once stayed and from whose gardens the first manned hot-air balloon flight took off in 1783. A commemorative plaque on place de Colombie marks that flight, just outside the present-day grounds.
