Standing above the meeting point of the Dorne and Eyrieux rivers, near Le Cheylard, La Chèze castle raises its towers on a spur overlooking the valley. Begun in the 13th century and altered through to the late 19th, the building survived the Wars of Religion before being gutted by fire in 1944. Bought by the local town and restored since the late 1980s, it can now be explored from the outside, along landscaped terraces within a large wooded estate.
