À la période féodale, Mureils était une terre des archevêques de Vienne et de l'arrière-fief des barons de Clérieu, appartenant en 1283 aux Moirans, qui le vendirent aux Alleman. À cette époque, La Bretonnière est désignée comme maison forte. Les aménagements successifs en firent une confortable gentilhommière. D'après la matrice cadastrale de Mureils, La Bretonnière est agrandie en 1879 par son propriétaire le vicomte de Larnage. Le domaine comprenait alors : château, maison grangère, écuries et hangar, une cour, des terrasses, des bosquets, terres labourables, vergers, bois, bâtiments d'exploitation et jardins. En 1894, le vicomte de Larnage cède le domaine de la Bretonnière aux Ballet-Gallifet, négociants lyonnais. Au tournant du XXe siècle, les décors des espaces d'habitation sont en place, salle à manger et salon, comportant lambris, céramiques, boiseries, plafonds à la française, ainsi qu'un salon chinois selon la mode du XIXe siècle.
