To make a day of it

Château de l'Escoublère stands in Daon (Mayenne), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

At Daon, in the Mayenne département, the Escoublère castle shows off its bell-shaped towers and gatehouse above deep moats that never run dry. Built mostly around 1530-1535 and then fortified in the 1560s and 1570s by Jean de Salles, the building combines Renaissance elegance with the military defences of the Wars of Religion. In the inner courtyard, a well decorated with columns and a dome bears a Latin inscription dated 1570, a mark of those troubled times. A later inscription, carved beneath the gatehouse, recalls that Chouan rebels made it their headquarters at the end of the 18th century.
