Château de l'Abbé stands in Ventenac-Cabardès (Aude), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 13th century, 14th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
The castle of the Abbot in Ventenac is a massive square-plan keep built in the 12th century that demonstrates the temporal power of Montolieu Abbey over these Aude lands. The tower, featuring a barrel-vaulted passage and floors accessible through adjacent buildings, still bears the marks of its Romanesque period: gothic windows with sculpted capitals, remnants of gutter and original cornice. The monument experienced turbulent history, passing between the hands of the abbot and lay lords, then occupied successively by reformers and the Catholic League during the Wars of Religion.

- The keep has several floors lit by Romanesque and gothic windows. A barrel-vaulted passage runs through the base of the tower between two arched doors.
- Did the castle suffer damage during the Wars of Religion?
- Yes, Ventenac was occupied by reformers in 1574 and by the Catholic League in 1589. Later modifications, particularly on the northeast side of the keep, bear traces of this.
