To make a day of it

Château de Grandpré stands in Grandpré (Ardennes), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

In Grandpré, in the Ardennes, stands the Porte de la Justice, the main surviving part of a château built by the Joyeuse family at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Dated 1618, this brick and limestone gatehouse displays a Louis XIII decor rarely seen in the area, with twisted columns, bretèches and a mullioned window. Two flanking pavilions, pierced with gun loops and topped with corner turrets, frame the passage that once controlled access to the Argonne gap.
