To make a day of it

Château de Freudeneck stands in Wangenbourg-Engenthal (Bas-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Freudeneck castle stands in ruins on a sandstone spur within the Wangenbourg state forest, in the Bas-Rhin department, close to Wangenbourg castle. Built around the turn of the fourteenth century by the von der Dick family, it passed through several co-owning lords before being stormed in 1408 during a conflict involving the city of Strasbourg. Left abandoned since the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, the site has been undergoing volunteer-led restoration since 2004. Visitors come mainly for the forest walk and the secluded atmosphere of the ruins rather than for any monumental architecture.
