To make a day of it

Château de Fournels stands in Fournels (Lozère), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: third quarter of the 16th century, 17th century, 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Built in 1573 for Jean, illegitimate son of the lord of Apcher, Fournels castle stands east of the village, overlooking three valleys. Its fortified appearance, with round towers and walls pierced by loopholes, still reflects its original defensive role. The Lastic wing, added to the west in the 16th century, completes the ensemble, and some rooms still hold old wood panelling and 19th century wallpaper. The interior, emptied of its period furniture, now suggests the former residence rather than displaying it.
