What the French Ministry of Culture records
Ancien domaine de la Couronne. Reconstruction décidée sous Louis XV d'après le projet de J.-A. Gabriel de 1751, poursuivi jusqu'en 1787 par L. Le Dreux de la Chatre. Nouvelle série de travaux sous Louis XVI. Aménagements intérieurs somptueux sous le Premier Empire. Dernière période de faste sous le Second Empire, Napoléon III et Eugénie en faisant leur demeure de prédilection. Vocation muséale à partir de 1873. Aménagement du parc par Gabriel et Le Dreux de la Chatre, modifié par Berthault entre 1811 et 1817. Petit Château du 18e siècle. Grandes écuries actuellement haras national.
