Perched on a rocky spur nearly 170 metres above the Loue valley, the ruins of Châteauneuf castle occupy a striking site overlooking the village of Vuillafans, in the Doubs department. Built by the lords of Durnes in the early 13th century, the stronghold once protected a fortified settlement of several hundred inhabitants. Destroyed at the end of the 15th century during the Burgundian Wars, only sections of the southwestern enclosure and traces of two successive ditches remain today. A visit means walking through these remains up to the mound of rubble that marks the site of the former keep.
