What the French Ministry of Culture records

Les époques de construction s'étendent du 12 siècle à 1793. Jalon important de l'architecture fortifiée et de plaisance des Clisson et des Rohan, le vaste domaine comprend le château, son parc, sa forêt, ses aménagements hydrauliques et terrains cultivés. D'après un édit, le château aurait été bâti de 1100 à 1108. En 1262, le duc Jean de Bretagne investit le château dont quatre tours sont rasées. Les ruines sont relevées de 1262 à 1320 par Olivier II le Jeune qui construisit le petit Chastel. A la fin du 15e siècle, Jean II de Rohan embellit le Logis du Roi et de la Reine, fait construire la chapelle et les murs de clôture. Le château subit le siège de 1591 ordonné par Mercoeur. Au 17e siècle, il est démantelé sur ordre de Richelieu.
