What the French Ministry of Culture records

Les origines de la seigneurie de Bernâtre remontent au 13e siècle. Les restes du château actuellement visibles datent des 14e et 15e siècles. Ravagé au 16e siècle puis brûlé par les Espagnols en 1635, il ne fut pas reconstruit par la suite, n'ayant plus de rôle militaire à jouer. Des bâtiments de ferme, entourant l'ancienne baille, furent accolés aux vestiges de l'ancienne demeure castrale. Il subsiste de celle-ci certains pans de murs ayant conservé quelques archères, des éléments de l'ancienne chapelle, la porte d'entrée du château proprement dit et, surtout, une tour de trois étages du 15e ou 16e siècle, assez bien conservée.
