Perched on a rocky spur above the Ardèche gorges, the Château de Balazuc overlooks one of the villages ranked among the most beautiful in France. Its rectangular keep, raised at the end of the 11th century, forms the core of a complex extended during the 12th and 13th centuries and later altered in the 14th and 15th centuries with the addition of mullioned windows. The building survived the Wars of Religion, the Revolution, and a long agricultural life as a silkworm farm before being restored. It is now a private residence.
