To make a day of it

Château d'Ordières stands in Benest (Charente), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

At the northern edge of the Charente department, in the commune of Benest, the Château d'Ordières combines a 15th century feudal keep with a Renaissance dwelling built in the early 17th century by the Pastoureau family. Listed as a historic monument, the site still shows the layout of its two defensive enclosures along the Charente river, with round towers, machicolations and a former portcullis gate. In the courtyard, a polygonal stair tower bears a coat of arms dated 1617, carved with griffins supporting the family's blazon.
