What the French Ministry of Culture records
La ville d'Aubais comptait déjà un premier château-fort au 13ème siècle. Sa tour ronde d'angle fut intégrée dans la composition lors de la reconstruction de l'édifice entre 1680 et 1685. A partir de cette date, la poursuite des travaux fut assurée par un architecte de Nîmes d'après les plans d'un ingénieur du roi. L'exceptionnel escalier monumental est son uvre. Occupant tout un pavillon, son ampleur ainsi que le soin apporté à sa réalisation ont suscité les louanges de ses contemporains, notamment de Vauban lui-même. Le château présente une architecture extérieure austère et monumentale, sans fioritures, au contraire de sa partie centrale plus richement travaillée comme en témoignent les motifs d'inspiration gallo-romaine. Le château offre un accès direct, à l'est, sur la place du village, anciennement cour d'honneur. La distribution intérieure était entièrement structurée à partir de l'escalier haut de 25 mètres, en arcs dont les volées convergent autour d'une seule volée centrale. Le palier du haut est porté par une voûte plate. La partie supérieure est décorée de niches finement ouvragées et le départ de l'escalier est sculpté. Le pavillon, autrefois surmonté d'un dôme, affirme sa domination sur les bâtiments qui l'entourent.
