In Angrie, in the Maine-et-Loire department, stands a neo-Gothic château built in the mid-19th century by Angers-based architect René Hodé for the Count and Countess of Lostanges, on the site of a medieval stronghold whose water-filled moat and two old bridges still remain. The building, a large rectangular block flanked by round towers, is notable for its reception rooms decorated with trompe-l'œil paintings by Achille Léger, an artist known for his opera set designs. It was the first building of this style constructed in Anjou, a model later echoed in other estates across the region.
